How can I figure a horses actual pace number per call given the lead horse times and the lengths behind the leaderHow to convert incremental times to pace numbers?
I assume that what you call a pace number may be what we would call in England a speed figure. Speed figures are given in pounds and so if A beats B at 5 furlongs at level weights you might conclude that A is 15 pounds better than B as it is reckoned at 5f that 3lb = 1 length. However this assumes that both horses have used the maximum energy of which they are capable which seldom proves to be the case. So you need to know how many lengths a horse can cover in a second in order to convert seconds into lengths. Well it covers 5 furlongs in about a minute which is 12 seconds per furlong which is 18.33 yards per second which I guess may be 5 or 6 lengths. So you can get anything from 15 to 20 pounds per second at 5f. Of course the longer the distance of the race the less poundage there is per second which means more variables to cope with. Horseracing is not a science that measuring seconds or lengths will provide you with the returns you are looking for. You may assume that 3lb = a length at 5f but 5 lengths will very seldom = 15 pounds and the handicapper does not expect it to. Study how the handicapper assesses horses which have run together and what allowances he makes the next time they meet and work on your own scale.
