What is the difference between real and imaginary numbers?

1 is a real number (natural).


1/2 is a real number (rational).


-1/2 is a real number (negative).


sqrt(1/2) is a real number (irrational).


BUT sqrt(-1) is NOT a real number (imaginary).What is the difference between real and imaginary numbers?

A real number is in the set of real numbers. An imaginary number is one with a coefficient of the square root of -1 or i. A complex number has the form z = a + bi where a, b are real numbers.
All imaginary numbers contain i, the square root of -1. So all imaginary numbers are the square roots of negative numbers. For instance, the square root of -9 is 3i. The square root of -20 is 2*sqrt(5)i. And so on. Real numbers don't contain i, so their squares are positive.





There are also complex numbers, which are the sum of a real number and an imaginary one, such as 3 + 2i. You tend to get those when you solve certain quadratic equations, because they involve adding a real number and a square root. If the square root is imaginary, you get a complex result.
