In the English language, the letters are from early Romantic languages, mostly Latin I think, well the actual alphabet is based on the Greek but Latin is a variation. The numbers are Arabic. I don't know how they came about in the beginning.

The letters originated from the Greek alphabet (alpha-beta). The numbers, I am not so sure.

The numbers actually originate in India and made amthmatics far easier than the Romain numerals used in the ';West';. They are known as arabic numbers because the arabic traders learnt them from the Indians and it was they that took them to the West.
