did any of these jersey numbers belong to significant ex-yankees players? if so, who? What are the positions and jersey numbers of all the current yankees players?
Go back to sleep little girl. What are the positions and jersey numbers of all the current yankees players?
A super interesting question! But totally difficult. I've spent a LOT of time searching for your answer, and trying all the keyword searches -- tough find.
The guy who wrote about the NY Yankees website is partially correct -- it has the current uniform numbers. That's easy. But unless you have a photographic memory, there's no way you can recall the obscure stuff.
Derek Jeter, for example, wears the same uni (#2) that Mark Koenig wore. Longtime third-base coach Frankie Crosetti also wore #2. And Gary Sheffield (#11) sports the same jersey worn by Hector Lopez, a pinch-hit specialist on the championship Yankees teams of the early 1960s.
Joe Torre (#6) has the familiar number worn by Yankee favorite Roy White, who played during the 1970s, including a few World Series championships. #6 was also Mickey Mantle's rookie number.
A-Rod wears the same number as the ';King'; -- Jim Leyritz, who had an epic HR in the 1996 World Series win.
Super-sub Andy Phillips wears #12 -- Billy Martin's rookie number, as well as Charlie Keller's from 1945-1948, Tanyon Sturtze (#56) wears the same uni as Jim Bouton did. Bouton wrote Ball Four and also gave us the Big League chew shredded gum. Bubba Crosby (#19) is wearing Whitey Ford's rookie uni.
And, since we gotta bring this to an end -- Jason Giambi wears #25 for two reasons. He preferred #16 but it was retired, so he chose 25 because those numbers (2 + 5) add up to #7.
And we all know who wore #7.
you tell me your a yankees fan
talk about jumping on the wagon
Go to www.yankees.com and look at the ROSTER tab...it will give you all the #'s %26amp; positions.
Most of the significant #'s that the Yankees of old wore, are retired now. #2 will be retired one day (Jeter) and #6 (Torre) will as well. That means that #'s 1 - 10 will all be gone.
But any significant Yankee has already had his # retired at this point.
