Yes it is marked by the S.S office when they are notified. But all systems are perfect and many have had their numbers stolen.Why don't people steal the numbers from the Social Security death records?
people do steal SS numbers of the dead. Numbers recycle though after a period of time, so as long as they in still in the cycle it takes awhile to get caught. I had a friend who worked in a nursing home, she was a nurse, that would take numbers of people who died and also numbers of people who had been there for a long time and no family came to visit them.
People DO steal those numbers and PEOPLE do go to jail for fraud for doing so.
It used to be that people stole information off of graves from babies that did not live long as people did not request numbers for them since they were alive for such a short amount of time.
Today, this would be risky also
